We are Artists...

Art & Design at Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School

At Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School, we are proud of our aspiring young artists. At SUN, every child is encouraged to explore their creativity through high‑quality, discrete Art and Design lessons where key skills are explicitly taught. Creative opportunities are also woven throughout our wider curriculum, allowing pupils to apply and deepen their artistic understanding across subjects.

The study of art at SUN includes a rich variety of media and artistic styles. Children learn through sculpture, collage, painting, photography, architecture, fashion and textiles, drawing, video and animation, printmaking and design.

As they progress through our art curriculum, pupils gain confidence working with a wide range of materials and resources, including wood, plastic, paper, yarn, clay, fabric, paint, crayon, pastel, charcoal, ink, digital tools, and recycled or natural found materials. They develop their knowledge of diverse artworks and artists, drawing on first‑hand experiences and high‑quality sources that represent a broad range of cultures, styles and media.

Children at SUN learn to observe carefully, evaluate thoughtfully and create or recreate with purpose. They develop an understanding of why art is made, where artists find inspiration and how creative processes differ from one artist to another. They also learn to distinguish between copying, being influenced by, and being inspired by the work of others.

Our art curriculum, designed in collaboration with Cornerstones, is enriched by our commitment to enable pupils to explore the work of artists, craftspeople and designers from a range of cultures, including those represented within our own school community and beyond.

Our aspiration is that every child at SUN feels inspired to be creative, using imagination, experimentation and personal expression to communicate ideas, emotions, observations and experiences both in school and beyond.

To be successful in Art & Design at SUN, learners will:

  • Rehearse and refine ideas — plan, practise and record observations as part of the journey towards a final piece
  • Use colour, form and texture — develop skills in drawing, painting, 3D modelling, printmaking and digital art using a range of materials
  • Build creative confidence — explore freely, take risks and reflect on their own work and the work of others
  • Appreciate visual expression — understand, respect and enjoy the artistic expressions of different people and cultures
  • Explore art in context — learn about the role of art in people’s lives, past and present, and study great artists, architects and designers
  • Use subject‑specific vocabulary — articulate ideas, opinions and feelings about their own artwork and that of others
  • Make meaningful connections — link learning across different areas of art and with other subjects such as Design Technology and History

Our SUN Arts Ambassadors champion the arts across the school, celebrating creativity and supporting the development of our vibrant artistic community.
