Physical Education
Physical Education at Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School
At Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School, Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting children’s physical development, wellbeing and enjoyment of active, healthy lifestyles. PE at SUN focuses on fitness, healthy habits and participation in a broad range of sporting activities. Children take part in gymnastics, games, athletics, dance and swimming, all of which contribute to their physical, social and emotional development. PE also supports wider learning about healthy eating, hygiene and positive body image.
Our PE curriculum, developed in collaboration with our specialist Sports Coaches at MNR, enables learners to develop a secure understanding of how their bodies work and the benefits of regular physical activity. Through increasingly complex tasks, games and sports, pupils build gross motor skills, spatial awareness, control, coordination and precision. They learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness and understand the physical and mental benefits of both competitive and non‑competitive activities.
Our aspiration is that every child at SUN is inspired to lead a healthy, active life—both in school and beyond.
To be successful in PE at SUN, learners will:
-
-
Be physically active — participate in competitive and non‑competitive sports for sustained periods
-
Develop broad competence — build skills across a wide range of physical activities
-
Use accurate vocabulary — apply subject‑specific terminology confidently
-
Show positive sporting attitudes — demonstrate perseverance, fair play, teamwork and resilience in success and challenge
-
Apply skills and concepts — adapt and transfer knowledge across different sports and activities
-
Understand health and fitness — recognise how exercise affects the body and develop positive attitudes to health and hygiene
-
Communicate and cooperate — work effectively with others and develop strong communication skills
-
Practise safe participation — understand and apply safe routines and behaviours in all PE activities
-
Make meaningful connections — link learning in PE with science, RSHE and other curriculum areas
-
PE at SUN in Practice
All children at SUN take part in at least two hours of PE each week, supported by additional opportunities to improve fitness through the daily mile and a range of optional after‑school sports clubs. We place high value on both physical and mental health, encouraging every child—regardless of ability—to enjoy sport, develop confidence and build the fundamental skills of agility, balance, coordination and overall fitness.
As with all our foundation subjects, PE follows a two‑year cycle, ensuring full coverage and rich opportunities for progression across the school.
We are proud of the positive attitudes our children bring to PE. As one visiting cricket coach recently commented:
“You should be immensely proud of the engagement and effort of your children; they are a credit to you and your school.”
