Geography at Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School
At Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School, the study of geography helps children understand how people interact with the world around them. Our curriculum encourages pupils to explore places, environments and communities, developing curiosity about the world and the people who live in it.
As a result of our geography curriculum, learners gain knowledge by asking increasingly complex geographical questions and exploring a wide range of places—locally, nationally and globally. Pupils develop key geographical skills through engagement with data presented in many forms, including digital and paper maps, graphs, aerial photographs, tools and models.
Learners develop an understanding of how where we live influences our lifestyle, considering factors such as climate, economics, society and the environment. They also learn about their own responsibility in addressing geographical and environmental issues, both now and in the future.
Teaching and learning in geography at SUN is enriched by our strong focus on international learning. We use a wide range of geographical sources and cultural stimuli to help pupils engage with the traditions and cultures of both home and host countries.
Our geography curriculum is further enhanced by trips, visits and outdoor learning experiences, including extensive fieldwork. These experiences allow pupils to explore environments first‑hand, develop environmental awareness and build interpersonal skills. Our beautiful local surroundings provide rich opportunities for practical geography and environmental education.
Our aspiration is that children at SUN develop a deep curiosity about different places and gain the knowledge and skills to understand the world both in and out of school.
To be successful in Geography at SUN, learners must:
-
Develop knowledge of places — understand a range of different places, countries and environments
-
Identify physical and human features — recognise and describe key geographical characteristics
-
Build mapping and fieldwork skills — use maps, compasses, fieldwork techniques and geographical tools
-
Communicate geographical understanding — use appropriate vocabulary and subject‑specific terminology
-
Understand environmental change — explore local and global issues and engage with current affairs
-
Make meaningful connections — link learning across geography and with subjects such as history and international learning
Thinking Like Geographers at SUN
Our two‑year rolling programme, developed with our learning partners at Cornerstones, ensures that children build the geographical skills needed to think like geographers. Practical geography and fieldwork in our beautiful local environment enrich learning for all pupils, helping them develop a strong sense of place and a deeper understanding of the world.
